Free Online Data Size & Storage Converter

Our free data size converter converts between all digital storage units — bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. It supports both the decimal (SI) standard (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, used by hard drive manufacturers) and the binary (IEC) standard (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, used by operating systems).

This is essential when you need to understand file sizes, compare storage devices, calculate bandwidth, plan cloud storage, or figure out why your "1TB" hard drive only shows 931 GB in Windows.

Common Data Size Conversions

  • 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,000 bytes (SI) or 1,024 bytes (binary)
  • 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,000 KB = 1,000,000 bytes
  • 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes
  • 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,000 GB = 1 trillion bytes
  • 1 Mbps internet = 0.125 MB/s download speed
  • 100 Mbps broadband = 12.5 MB/s download speed
  • 1 hour HD video ≈ 1–4 GB depending on quality

Frequently Asked Questions

Hard drive manufacturers use the decimal standard (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). But Windows uses binary units — 1 TB in Windows = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. So a "1TB" drive actually has about 931 GB as shown by Windows. The physical storage is correct — it's just a difference in how the number is calculated and displayed.
A megabit (Mb) is 1,000,000 bits and is used for network and internet speeds. A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes = 8,000,000 bits and is used for file sizes. Internet providers advertise speeds in Mbps (megabits per second). To convert to download speed in MB/s, divide by 8. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.
In the decimal (SI) system: 1 TB = 1,000 GB. In the binary (IEC) system used by operating systems: 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. For everyday storage calculations, use 1 TB ≈ 1,000 GB as a practical guide.
A typical smartphone photo (12–24 MP JPEG) is 3–8 MB. A 1-minute 4K video is roughly 350 MB–1.5 GB depending on codec. 1 GB holds approximately 200–300 photos or 1–3 minutes of 4K video. A 256 GB phone can hold approximately 50,000 photos or about 10–50 hours of video.
